DIGITAL CERTIFICATION

Digital signature

Just like a handwritten signature, a digital signature is a process that enables a signer, and his consent to the content of the signed deed, to be authenticated.

It also ensures the integrity and non-repudiation of the electronic signed documents. A digital signature thus allows the climate of trust that governs physical exchanges (traditional post mail) to be reproduced on the Internet, since it becomes impossible to repudiate a digital document (order form, payment order…).

The tunisian Law 2000-83 of 9 August 2000 on trade and e-commerce gives digital signatures the same legal force as signatures written in ink. By making electronic signatures legally binding, this legislation enables consumers, enterprises, and government organizations to use the Internet to engage in transactions and business processes that require a personal signature, including signing important documents, applying for credit cards, and opening bank accounts.

Digital signature uses the principle of public key cryptography: the enciphering is done with a private key and the deciphering with a public key. A document to be signed is first of all processed by a function (hash) that gives a digital print. This is then enciphered with the signer’s private key. The result constitutes the digital signature of the document.

Person A can sign a document with his private key and send it to B. B can only verify A’s signature with A’s public key. In this case, B will be able to verify that A has sent him the document and that it has not been altered after the signing.
